My Journey from Hairstylist to Digital Designer

Hello, I'm Chloe, the founder of Designed By Chloe Marie. In early 2024, I embarked on a significant career change. For nearly two decades after leaving school, I worked as a full-time hairstylist. However, my life took an unexpected turn in 2017 when I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease. This marked the beginning of a challenging journey, as I was subsequently diagnosed with several autoimmune conditions, including arthritis, alopecia, and psoriasis. I also battled recurrent tonsillitis (up to eight times a year) and developed carpal tunnel syndrome in both wrists due to the repetitive strain of hairdressing.

The Shift to Self-Employment

In 2018, I made the decision to become self-employed. The physical demands of the fast-paced salon where I worked had become too much for my body to handle. Additionally, I needed to accommodate frequent hospital admissions, daily doctor's appointments, regular IV treatments, and medication collection. As a single mother at the time, juggling all these responsibilities was incredibly challenging.

This transition marked the beginning of my entrepreneurial journey. Running my own business in the beauty industry taught me a great deal. Digital marketing, design, and website building, which were initially daunting tasks, soon became enjoyable hobbies. However, I still found myself working excessive hours as a hairdresser - it's difficult to turn down work when you're self-employed. Inevitably, I reached a point of burnout and physical exhaustion. My body simply couldn't keep up with the demands.

The Need for Change

I realised I needed a career change, but I was passionate about enjoying my work life. Hairdressing had never felt like a chore to me, and I'd never dreaded going to work. I wasn't sure if I could find another career that I'd enjoy as much.

During my online searches, I discovered a digital marketing course at the Curious Lounge. For my 2024 New Year's resolution, I decided to delve deeper into the world of digital marketing, as I had enjoyed it so much whilst running my own business.

Embracing New Opportunities

I enrolled in the course, and Louize and her team were incredibly welcoming. Immediately, I knew I had made the right decision. The other course participants were lovely, too. It was fantastic to meet other self-employed individuals who shared the same passion and drive for building a business. I attended the office when my health allowed, but with a 14-month-old baby and a teenager to care for, much of my learning was done online.

Louize set up a project for us to practice digital marketing for our businesses. I didn't want to focus on my hairdressing business, as I knew I could no longer do that full-time. I opened up to Louize about feeling lost in life, only knowing myself as a mum and a hairdresser. She suggested I focus my project and business model on becoming a designer for the beauty and wellness industry, given my extensive knowledge in this area. Although initially sceptical, I decided to give it a go. Soon, I found myself working and studying at every opportunity, thoroughly enjoying what I was doing. I could envision doing this part-time alongside my hairdressing.

Overcoming Self-Doubt

I went through a phase of doubting my ability to make this career change, thinking I wasn't good enough. However, Louize helped me find confidence within myself. She took the time to listen and guide us all through our projects. The other course participants were also incredibly supportive. The balance between practical work and lectures was perfect. Our working environment was private and quiet when we needed to focus, but also very friendly and welcoming during group discussions. Public speaking had always frightened me, but Louize managed to make us all feel comfortable. The team made everyone feel welcome, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere - almost like walking into a cosy family lounge with a coffee shop.

Gaining Knowledge and Confidence

Thanks to Louize, I've gained extensive knowledge about digital marketing, from various apps to website development and social media management. I now also have accountability; I know that most of what I was doing before for my own business was correct. I had taught myself a lot, but I never knew if I was doing everything properly.

I thoroughly enjoyed the course and would recommend it to anyone wanting to start a business. I never would have been able to launch my new business as organised as I have if I hadn't learned what I did with Louize, and I am incredibly grateful to her for that.

A Perfect Work-Life Balance

I now enjoy the perfect work-life balance. My children are happier because I am more present, as my new business allows me to work from home. My health has improved because on my poorly days, I can slow down and be kinder to myself. I can snuggle up with a blanket and work from the sofa with my laptop, allowing me to physically rest while still earning an income to support my family.

The past year has been truly life-changing for me, and it all started with Louize and the Curious Lounge. I am so grateful to have met Louize and experienced the course.
