Unearthing Cat’s Superpowers

In March 2023, I was hit with the unexpected news of being made redundant. It knocked me off balance for a while, but I made a conscious decision to turn this setback into an opportunity and do something that I had always wanted to do.

Over the years, I had juggled roles that accommodated my responsibilities as a mum, but I sensed it was time to pursue a career path that would truly bring me joy. I had worked in Marketing departments previously, but never really had the chance to put my design and creative skills to the test. Instead, I found myself immersed in project management tasks, always on the organisational side rather than the creative one, which is where I truly wanted to be. I knew that whatever I did next had to align with my creative side. That's when I started exploring digital marketing as a potential path.

A few months before I enrolled on the course, a friend suggested exploring bootcamps, and the concept really resonated with me. When Louize contacted me and mentioned the Digital Marketing bootcamps, I was intrigued. The next week, I met Louize in person, and I was thoroughly impressed. I loved the decor and welcoming atmosphere, and I knew right away that it was an opportunity I couldn't afford to miss.

When I started the bootcamp, my main aim was to secure a job immediately after completing the course. Therefore, I prioritised absorbing as much knowledge and gaining practical experience with each platform to improve my prospects in the job market. My objective was to master Canva, effectively navigate content management systems platforms, and develop a thorough understanding of SEO. I knew that mastering these skills would set me apart and lead me to success in my desired career path.

Throughout the bootcamp, I gained proficiency in various key skills and explored new platforms. These included paid search advertising, email marketing, website design, Content Management Systems (CMS), Canva, analytical skills, and Search Engine Optimisation.

In our final project, I took the lead on two key aspects: paid search and rebranding efforts for a local business. For the paid search component, I utilised Ads Manager to select strategic keywords that would effectively target our desired audience. I created Google Ads and LinkedIn Ads using Canva, ensuring that our messaging and call-to-action were compelling and aligned with our objectives. I created content for the landing pages, which I developed in HubSpot. I also played a significant role in refining the aesthetic of the rebrand.

During the bootcamp, one of the biggest challenges I faced was financial strain due to not having a job. However, my husband and I believed that investing in my education would lead to better opportunities in the long run. We decided to prioritise my career growth, despite the immediate financial challenges. Ultimately, this decision paid off, as I not only acquired new skills but also secured a job that I enjoy and is better paid!

My biggest takeaway from the bootcamp was realising the power of perseverance and the importance of having a strong support system. Despite facing challenges such as financial strain and balancing family responsibilities, I remained committed to my goals and leaned on support of my family. This experience taught me that with determination and support, I could overcome obstacles and achieve success. It was a profound "aha" moment that reaffirmed my belief in the value of resilience and the significance of surrounding oneself with supportive individuals.

On the course, I discovered a newfound superpower in creating banner ads and making videos in Canva. I was fortunate to have a friend willing to act in the video, and I even managed to get a group of strangers to appear in it too!

The bootcamp provided me with a solid foundation for a career in digital marketing by equipping me with essential tools and skills. One of the most valuable aspects was learning how to create and present a marketing plan, something I wouldn't have been able to do without completing the course. I gained confidence throughout the course, which has been instrumental in my professional development, and I am now in a much better place.

The Curious Academy is an exceptional training venue. I love the quirky décor, abundance of plants, and the themed animal rooms - Matt and Louize have truly thought of everything! Not to mention the delicious coffees!

During the interview process, I spoke about the project that I was involved in and my achievements from the bootcamp. I emphasised how my newfound skills in areas such as SEO, digital advertising, and Canva, combined with my previous experience, would contribute to the success of the team and the organisation.

The first interview was conducted over Teams. I had the chance to discuss my background and share insights from the bootcamp, highlighting the new skills I had acquired. Following this, I was invited to present a marketing plan in person, which provided an excellent opportunity to showcase my strategic thinking and creativity. I was then invited for a coffee meeting for the third interview. This informal setting allowed for more personal interaction and further discussion about the role and team dynamics.

Now that I've completed the bootcamp, I'm thrilled to be applying my new skills in my role, which involves designing brochures, updating the company website, creating proposals and marketing plans, conducting competitor analysis, and working on email campaigns. Looking ahead, I'm eager to further support digital advertising and SEO initiatives as I continue to grow and develop in my career.

If you are considering attending a similar bootcamp, my advice would be to fully immerse yourself in the experience. Take the time to digest the information provided during the sessions, as opportunities like this don't come around often! Don't hesitate to put in extra work outside of the bootcamp hours to deepen your understanding and skills. Also, make the most of collaborative opportunities with your peers. Engage in discussions, share ideas, and learn from each other.
