Susan - My Journey into Data Analytics. Reflections on Learning and Growth
Data analytics caught my interest because it reveals the stories hidden in numbers. My curiosity sparked during my MSc and PhD research when I worked on projects that involved analysing the data generated from my biological samples to interpret what was happening at the molecular level. It was eye-opening to see how insights from the data could make a real difference, and that made me realise this is the path I want to take. Fun fact: I love solving puzzles, and working with data feels like tackling one big, complex puzzle daily.
My journey into data analytics began when I discovered a bootcamp while doing online research to find structured learning options for entering the field. Going into the bootcamp, I set clear goals for myself: to improve my skills in essential analytical tools, understand data visualization techniques, and create a portfolio of real-world projects. I also aimed to enhance my ability to share data-driven insights.
The bootcamp experience at The Curious Academy was thoroughly engaging. We attended sessions from 1 to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with each day bringing a mix of lectures, hands-on exercises, and collaborative projects. The sessions were designed to keep us engaged, focusing on applying theoretical concepts through practical assignments. This balance of learning and doing made the experience impactful and helped solidify our understanding of key data analytics skills.
Throughout the program, I developed proficiency in essential tools like Spreadsheets, SQL, and Tableau, while mastering the fundamentals of data cleaning, analysis, and visualization. The bootcamp's emphasis on data storytelling taught me how to create engaging narratives around my findings.
One of my proudest achievements is my portfolio piece, where I analyzed "Market Trends and Generational Preferences for Anti-Aging Products and the Cost-Effectiveness of Gene Therapy versus Cosmetics." This project demonstrates my ability to gather data from trusted sources like Statista, Digital Ageing Atlas, and WHO to examine anti-aging trends across different generations and compare the costs of gene therapy with cosmetic treatments. Using spreadsheets and Tableau, I conducted comparative analyses to identify generational spending patterns on anti-aging products and evaluate the long-term cost-effectiveness of gene therapy. Through clear visualizations, I highlighted key findings about market growth and treatment comparisons. The project's relevance to our aging global population and its intersection with consumer behavior and healthcare innovation made it particularly meaningful. Beyond data presentation, I explored the risks and opportunities of emerging treatments, providing a balanced perspective on the future of anti-aging therapies.
The interactive dashboards I created during the bootcamp stand out as elements I'm particularly excited to showcase to potential employers. They not only highlight my technical skills and creativity but also demonstrate my ability to transform raw data into actionable insights.
The journey wasn't without its challenges. One of the biggest obstacles was balancing my studies with my job as a kitchen porter. The physical demands and long hours often left me exhausted, making it difficult to focus on preparing dashboards. However, my determination drove me to develop efficient time management skills, utilizing every available moment for study and practice. This experience built my resilience, discipline, and commitment to achieving my goals.
My most significant "aha" moment came during a group exercise focused on puzzle-solving. This collaborative experience revealed the power of diverse perspectives in problem-solving. I discovered that combining logical thinking with creativity often yielded the best solutions, reinforcing the importance of teamwork and effective communication in data analytics.
During the course, I uncovered what I consider my superpower: the ability to make data accessible to general audiences through clear and impactful visuals. I learned to transform complex datasets into compelling stories, using visualizations to highlight key insights in ways that resonate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
The Curious Academy proved to be an exceptional training venue, creating a supportive and collaborative learning environment. The warm atmosphere, knowledgeable and approachable instructors, and comprehensive resources contributed to an enriching educational experience. The well-structured curriculum promoted critical thinking and innovation, while thoughtful touches like complimentary refreshments helped foster a strong sense of community among students and instructors.
Looking ahead, I aim to secure a role as a data analyst or business intelligence analyst where I can leverage data to drive business decisions, particularly in customer behavior analysis and process optimization. I plan to continue developing my skills by deepening my knowledge of machine learning and predictive analytics while enhancing my proficiency in Python and cloud-based data tools.
My PhD background has equipped me with advanced research and analytical skills, teaching me to approach problems systematically and work with complex datasets. This experience, combined with my ability to communicate findings effectively, will make me a valuable asset in any data analytics role.
What excites me most about beginning this career is the opportunity to use data to solve real-world problems and contribute to impactful projects. I'm eager to continue learning and growing in this dynamic field.
For those considering a similar bootcamp, my advice is to be proactive and engage fully in every aspect of the program. Don't hesitate to ask questions, collaborate with peers, and embrace challenges. Building a strong portfolio and network during the course will set you up for success.
If you're reading this and work in data analytics, I would love to connect with you and learn from your experiences. Any advice, mentorship, or opportunities to collaborate on projects would be immensely valuable as I embark on this exciting journey.
